Mike left Penketh High School with ambitions to be an English teacher. However his dad had ambitions for him to be a fitter in a factory. A compromise was reached when Mike attended an interview with Nat West straight from school and was offered a job as a trainee. He worked, as he states, “At a host of branches throughout the North as a personal mortgage adviser, but eventually I needed a new challenge and moved to Friends Provident.” Mike worked on an IFA telephone helpline desk, then the Business Acceptance Team and handled compliance files. Following an FSA review Mike was asked to manage and re-train a team of forty. Further assignments included managing the operational aspects of Business Review Managers, before deciding to use his experiences in a mixture of compliance and advice roles to become a Technical Planner for Bright in 2007.
Mike’s time is taken up in helping with his two grandchildren and tending his allotment. Asked how he came to have an allotment the answer is simple. “An interest in food and a love of Cornwall led me to follow Rick Stein’s work in Padstow. Then Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage inspired me to grow the food I cook…although my neighbours benefit from fresh produce more than I do sometimes!”
